In 2006, the Federal Cabinet adopted the National Strategy for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) in Germany. At the end of 2009, the federal spatial planning regulations for the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the North Sea and Baltic Sea came into force. These Spatial Planning Plans form the basis for maritime spatial planning. The legal basis for their establishment is the Federal Spatial Planning Act (Raumordnungsgesetz des Bundes, ROG).
