In 2006, the Federal Cabinet adopted the National Strategy for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) in Germany. At the end of 2009, federal ordinances on spatial planning in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the North Sea and Baltic Sea came into force. These maritime spatial plans form the basis for marine spatial planning. The legal basis for their preparation is the Federal Spatial Management Act (ROG).
