In April 2002, the Federal Government published its first National Strategy for Sustainable Development, which has been continuously developed since then. The Federal Government submits a progress report on its implementation every four years.

Since 2015, the 2030 Agenda, with its 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has formed the basis of the Federal Government’s sustainability policy. Building on this, the Federal Cabinet approved the New Version 2016 on 11 January 2017. This was followed by the 2021 Update on 10 March 2021 and, the current 2025 Update on 29 January 2025.
