The Water Framework Directive came into force in December 2000. Its aim is to establish a coherent framework for the protection of inland surface waters, transitional and coastal waters, and groundwater. At national level, the directive is implemented in the Water Resources Act (Wasserhaushaltsgesetz, WHG), the Water Laws of the Länder and through decrees and Länder ordinances.
